This year’s National Meeting, in looking ahead to the new millenium, places particular emphasis on the importance of building on the success of what has been achieved in prevention through many issues related to promising strategies, outcome-based models, and current research. In continuing to examine the many issues related to alcohol, other drugs, and violence on our campuses and in the surrounding communities, the Planning Committee has articulated four areas of focus upon which to build effective prevention efforts.

1 Networking and Collaboration
2 Research Based Strategies supporting what works in prevention, and identifying strategies designed to document effectiveness and provide insight for replication.
3 Professional Development Skills to provide education, support and guidance to practitioners in the field.
4 Current Issues and Controversies including their identification and suggestions for interventions.

Workshop Topics:

Reducing underage and other high-risk drinking

Countering violence, sexual harassment, vandalism, and other crimes

The use of assessment and evaluation data in policy development and program planning

Emerging prevention theories, methodologies and technologies

Campus-community, regional, and statewide partnerships

Effective programs for changing environment and campus culture

Who should attend?

Prevention professionals (Disciplines can include health education and wellness, alcohol and other drug abuse prevention, student affairs, residence life, law enforcement, peer education, and violence prevention);

College and university students;

Community-based coalitions (including prevention and treatment providers, law enforcement); and

Representatives from state and national organizations concerned with collegiate alcohol and other drug abuse and violence issues.
