Overview
Visions and Partnerships in Action
As indicated by the theme, this years National
Meeting places particular emphasis on the importance of building partnerships and
creating a collective vision in prevention. As all of us continue to examine the many
issues related to alcohol, other drugs, and violence on our campuses and in the
surrounding communities, the Planning Committee for this years event has established
four areas of focus upon which a foundation is created for effective prevention efforts.
- Research-Based Programs that support what works in
prevention and that document effectiveness in reducing alcohol and other drug abuse and
violence on campus and in the surrounding community, or that identify strategies designed
to address alcohol, other drugs, and violence concerns, including documentation of
effectiveness and insight for replication.
- Professional Development Topics will include
managing conflict, being an effective change agent, building leadership skills, working
with the media, finding funding and preparing grant applications, getting published,
developing cultural competence, developing a curriculum infusion program, conducting
appropriate needs assessments, doing evaluations, getting community involvement, and
developing helpful marketing strategies.
- Current Issues and Controversies will include the
debate over alcohol industry sponsorship of prevention programs, college responsibility
for off-campus behavior, the value of federal intervention, and language issues such as binge
drinking and responsible drinking.
- Networking and Collaboration that include model
campus and community partnerships, now increasingly important because of limited staffing
resources and funding dedicated to prevention.
